Before you rely on this

  • Indicative estimate only — not a quotation or a customs declaration.
  • Not customs, tax, or legal advice.
  • Confirm the tariff classification (HS code), duty rate and origin evidence with a licensed customs broker.
  • Excise, Wine Equalisation Tax (WET), Luxury Car Tax and anti-dumping or countervailing duties are not included.
  • Currency, freight and insurance figures you enter are used as-is; the customs value for CIF/CIP is an approximation.

Landed cost calculator FAQ

Landed cost is the total cost of getting imported goods onto your shelf — not just the supplier's price. It includes the goods value, international freight and insurance, customs duty, GST, import processing and biosecurity charges, and any local broker, port and delivery fees. This calculator rolls all of those into a single cost per unit.

Australia assesses duty on the customs value, which is broadly the FOB (free on board) price of the goods at the export port. The calculator derives it from your Incoterm — for example it adds pre-export costs for EXW quotes and backs freight out of CIF/CFR quotes — so duty is applied to the right base.

GST is charged at 10% on the value of the taxable importation (the customs value plus duty, freight and insurance). If your business is GST-registered you can generally claim it back, so the calculator can treat it as recoverable and show your real landed cost excluding GST. It can also model deferred GST if you're on that scheme.

Many China-origin goods qualify for a 0% preferential duty rate under the China–Australia Free Trade Agreement, but only if you hold a valid Certificate or Declaration of Origin. Tick the ChAFTA option once you have the paperwork to see the duty saving; without it, the general rate applies.

No — the freight estimate uses indicative placeholder rates to give you a ballpark while you plan. Always confirm actual freight with your forwarder, or switch to "I have a quote" and enter your real figure for an accurate landed cost.
